⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessHousing all of the offenders who are arrested for both felonies and misdemeanors throughout St. Joseph County, the St. Joseph County Jail accepts both male and female inmates and houses them throughout the time they are waiting for their trial, their sentencing, or as they serve a short sentence. Long sentenced (over one year) offenders will be transferred to a Michigan State Prison. If you think someone you know has been arrested, you can check for their presence and bond amounts either by calling 269-467-4009 or accessing the online lookup. The top capacity of the jail is around 167 inmates, which may vary depending upon how many male and female inmates are present as this will affect the assignments of the housing units, as well as the number of dangerous offenders or those facing serious charges.
Upon arrival booking will occur, and when the assessment that accompanies that is completed, the offender will be provided with their assignment to a housing unit, and that assignment is based upon their current charges, past charges, and if they have a history of poor behavior during other incarcerations.
With around 3500 inmates passing through each year, there will be periods where there are additional pods for women or violent offenders, which will decrease the overall capacity for that period of time and there will be more empty beds that are unusable than during other times.
Staff and programs focus on secure and humane incarceration, safety, and rehabilitation. Programs are included to provide education, rehabilitation, mental health, ministry, and health care. The inmate worker program can see approved inmates working in the facility in the kitchen or laundry, or they may have tasks as work crews for the county outside of the campus, providing services to the county and their community.
Friends and family may continue to support inmates through monetary support, accepting and engaging in phone class, and attending visits.

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use an Express Account self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Call the St. Joseph County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
