About the Otsego County Jail

The Otsego County Jail has a top capacity of 34, and houses all offenders charged with both misdemeanor and felony crimes throughout Otsego County, and they remain here as they wait for their trial, sentence, or transfer to another location. The jail is located in downtown Gaylord, allowing easy access for both staff and visitors, and is accessible for everyone with ample parking for those who will visit.

In order to determine if someone is at the jail, their bail, or their status, there is both an online lookup and jail staff are able to answer questions about an inmate that are not covered by privacy protections when you call 989-731-7289.

Upon intake, the booking process is completed, which includes a medical screening, fingerprinting and mugshots, DNA sample, along with an assessment to determine security needs, medical needs, mental health requirements, and housing assignment. 

Staff is available to transport all inmates to court dates and any medical appointments or emergency needs, as well as inspecting all mail for contraband, receiving commissary funds and other money for inmates, maintaining the safety of the community and the security of the facility, and other tasks. 

The Otsego County Jail also provides several other services to inmates including basic needs in meals, laundry, and hygiene items, and programs including AA, counseling, religious programs, education, recreation, and opportunities to grow social and life skills. 

Contracts with local suppliers ensures all medical and mental health needs are met, and three healthy meals are provided each day by the onsite food service director and work crew.

No personal property is accepted by the Otsego County Jail unless via mail in unopened packages for indigent inmates including the following items all in white: 

Three each of bras, socks, underwear, tshirts, and 3 paperback books may be mailed directly from the publisher only.

... and it is necessary to include only a return address on the envelope, with all contraband being removed or denied upon arrival.

Several programs are offered including group meetings, community service via the work camp, GED, group counseling, religious counseling, and a trustee program that provides inmates with work tasks around the campus.

Phone services are provided by a third party organization and an account can be created online to provide prepaid calls with only outgoing calls available.

Visiting hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 9am-9:30pm for up to one hour or two one-half hour visits, all of which are scheduled at least 24 hours in advance by contacting the jail at 989-731-7289.

Work Camp

Operating the alternatives to incarceration for Otsego County, the Sheriff also runs a work camp that works only with non-violent misdemeanor or lower felony charges and provides supervision for the work programs. Offenders are included on the online roster and will be provided with full details on the programs after their court date. Only those who are sentenced to alternatives to incarceration, sentence to service, or other work programs may participate. Work tasks are completed for nonprofit groups or government organization, and all experience and work will be reported to the judge as progress throughout the program. The work camp is located behind the courthouse at 204 Livingston Blvd. in Gaylord, which also has probation and parole, a multipurpose room, and other court and legal services.
