Muskegon County Juvenile Transition Center Information

Housing both the detention portion and the residential treatment, the Muskegon County Juvenile Transition Center houses juveniles for the entirety of their assigned period. All youth who are in the facility have been adjudicated and assigned there or who are accused and waiting for their adjudication. Of the 32 beds in the building, there are 24 of them designated for detention, while the other 8 beds are for the residential spaces. Several services are provided to the youth who are in residence or being held in detention including counseling, educational programs, health services, a nutrition program, recreation programming, religious services for those who choose to attend, amended arts programs, and a youth arts alliance. These are all offered with the goal of encouraging the development of life skills, self-expression, and offering alternative methods of managing emotions as well as supporting good decision making. Rather than focusing on punishment for the acts that resulted in treatment or detention, the programing is to encourage youth to develop and grow and provide tools that are required for their futures. Mail: Mail is permitted to be delivered to the facility through the postal service and will only be checked for contraband, staff will not open the letters without the youth present, nor will they read them. Phones: Phones are present in the facility for juveniles to call their parents or their legal guardians throughout the week. Visitation: Visiting hours are provided for parents or guardians and are determined by housing assignment as follows: Group A1: Saturdays from 2-3 pm, Group B1: Saturday from 4-5 pm, Group A2: Sundays from 2-3 pm, Group B2: Sundays from 4-5 pm
