About the Monroe County Main Jail Facility

The Monroe County Jail in Michigan, built in 1981, has a capacity of 183 inmates. At the time it cost $11 million to build.

It is one of two jails in Monroe County, the second being the newer Monroe County Dormitory Facility, first occupied in 2001. The Monroe County Jail is located in downtown Monroe, across the street from the County Courthouse, and connected by a skybridge, at 100 East Second Street. You can call the jail 24 hours a day by calling 734-240-7430.

The Monroe County Main Jail Facility is a multi story reddish brick building that also houses the Sheriff's Department, the organization that runs the jail with Sheriff's deputies as the corrections officers. Between the two facilities the Sheriff's Department arrests and books approximately 3500 offenders each year. The jails detain local offenders as well as those arrested by ICE and the US Marshals. On any given day there are approximately 22 ICE inmates and 20 associated with the US Marshals.

You can look up an inmate and find information about them online on the Monroe County Inmate Search, specifically their criminal charges, bond, who arrested them and the date they were arrested. If you want the inmate number, which you will need in order to mail them, you need to call 734-240-7430.

The Monroe County Main Jail Facility operates a full service kitchen to feed the inmates, with each mail costing the facility about $1.63 to prepare. They also have a medical clinic.

Recently the Monroe County Main Jail Facility began using a new electronic tracking system, called Guardian RFID®. The system includes a handheld Spartan device (a unit is assigned to each corrections officer while working) which is similar to a smartphone, inmate ID card with embedded RFID microchips and hardened, bulletproof wall tag. All inmate movement, physical headcounts, security checks, medical care and many other inmate activities are captured with the Spartan devices and recorded ‘live’ into the software cloud. The data is then instantaneously transferred to the Inmate Monitoring and Inmate Locator system you see online.

The Monroe County Main Jail Facility incarcerates both men and women, and all security classifications. The classifications are generally broken down with 13% being maximum security, 49% being medium security, and 38% minimum security.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. Friends and family of inmates in the Monroe County Main Jail Facility can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week. You can also look up any inmate's next court date online or see which inmates have had their visitation privileges suspended.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 734-240-7430.
