About the Chanter Road Jail

The Chanter Road Jail, located at 1995 Chanter Road in Jackson, MI 49201 in Jackson County, Michigan has a maximum capacity of 240 inmates. You can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 517-768-1609. They don't have an official Inmate search feature, nor do they have a public Jail Roster, but you can find information about an inmate by either calling the jail at 517-768-1609, or online by looking them up on Vinelink, or by registering with the jail's inmate money deposit company and then after choosing Jackson County, searching for the inmate on their website. The Chanter Road Jail has state of the art security and surveillance equipment, and was the first jail of its type in Michigan to use this.

The Chanter Road Jail is a correctional facility that houses inmates ranging from low-level misdemeanor offenders to those awaiting trial for violent crimes like robbery, rape, and murder. The conditions at the jail have been described as liveable... and is in far better shape than it's sister jail on Wesley Street, which has completely deteriorated since it was first built in 1953.

Jackson County does have another jail, known as the Wesley Street Jail. The plan that the county put before the voters in November 2022 was to add 250 beds to this facility (the Chanter Road Jail), a new booking area and some holding cells to that facility at a cost of $50 million., but it was rejected, with 35,923 voting no to 25,018 voting yes. The upgrade would have allowed them to shut down the older, Wesley Street Jail completely.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. Friends and family of inmates in the Chanter Road Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 517-768-1609.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Chanter Road Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use an Express Account self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Chanter Road Jail uses Express Account to process all online deposits to an inmate's account.

The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Call the Chanter Road Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.

Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.

To do this you will need the inmate's offender # (inmate ID #) and full legal name.

Chanter Road Jail uses a third party service called Express Account, affiliated with TIGGS Canteen Service to deposit money in an inmate's account.

By creating an account with Express Account you can send money:

  • Online 24/7

  • By using the Chanter Road Jail Kiosk which takes cash, debit and credit cards.
