Ingham County Youth Center Information

Bay Pines is a residential treatment alternative that provides intensive treatments for juveniles who have finished their court dates and have been assigned to the center for their treatment options. It accepts youth who are between the ages of 12 and 20, with those who are older being assigned to adult facilities, and the average stay is 13 months. There is a strong focus on education with 20 hours a week being spent in the onsite classrooms, and an average grade increase of one and a half grades over the year, with support from the local school board. For those who graduate high school there are college credits available. Physical education and conditioning are also provided in the form of baseball, rock climbing, and cross country skiing when the weather is appropriate. Adventure Education locations are also present on the grounds, along with Native American support and spiritual enrichment, psychiatric services, and psychological care. Medical and dental care are also provided for all those who are in residence.   • Only parents or legal guardians may visit.
  • They must be on the visitation list.
  • No children are allowed in the building at any time.
  • A maximum of two visitors per resident at one time are allowed in the visiting area.
  • If a person exits the building the visit is concluded.
  • Purses, handbags, and unapproved items are not allowed in the building. Only keys and picture I.D. are allowed in the building.
  • Those arriving to visitation on public transportation (i.e. CATA) should secure all personal items (except picture I.D.) in token operated lockers in the intake hallway.
  • Mail, notes, pictures, and cards must be sent through the U.S. Postal system addressed to the Youth Center, before they can be given to a resident.
  • Food, beverages, money, tobacco, hair products or anything else may NOT be brought to the resident in the Youth Center.
  • Smoking is not allowed in the facility.
  • There will be no hair braiding or any other kind of grooming (nail cutting, braiding, combing, brushing of hair) during visitation.
  • No excessive hugging or physical contact.
  • We reserve the right to refuse visitation to anyone believed by our personnel to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

The Ingham County Youth Center allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. It is best to only use blue or black ink. Always include your name and return address.

Newspapers may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Ingham County Youth Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Ingham County Youth Center standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
