Offering a secure facility for up to 40 male juveniles of the ages 12 to 21, Shawono Center specializes in specific treatment needs. It offers specifically four specialized treatment programs that address sex offenders, substance abuse and addictions, general crimes, and delinquency. The youth at this location are only accepted if they are convicted of at least one felony, so security is a main focus, and it is a high security location. High levels of security protect both the surrounding community and the youth within. Each of the four programs is designed to address the root causes and main effects of these concerns and they include therapy, behavioral programs, mental health support, and all are provided with counseling, therapy, and even family therapy where needed. Full access is provided to education, high school credits and GEDs included, with small classes and trained and certified teachers. Other services are provided across the facility and with all the programs including site wide Balanced Restorative Justice projects, full medical and dental care, psychiatric and psychological services, additional educational opportunities, spiritual development, and reintegration programs to help them as they return to their community. The Shawono Center allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office.
