About the Washington County Jail

Proudly standing on the corner of Court Street in far northeast Machias, Maine the large red brick building from 1858 still houses the Washington County courthouse, sheriff's office, and the 40-bed Washington County Jail. It is here that all offenders arrested in Washington County for either felony or misdemeanor offenses will be held as they await bail or their trial.

Upon intake, the booking process is completed, which includes a medical screening, fingerprinting and mugshots, DNA sample, along with an assessment to determine security needs, medical needs, mental health requirements, and housing assignment.

For information on an inmate or procedures the office staff is available during business hours at 207-255-3434. To stay updated on the jail, the Washington County Sheriff maintains a very active Facebook page.

Inmates are provided with medical care directly upon arrival if required, and will be provided with ongoing medical care throughout their detention, along with mental health services, meals, and clean clothing and bedding.

As a smaller facility there are not the extensive programs that are in place with other locations, however all basic needs are met.

Inmates will have access to phones for making collect calls thought they cannot receive calls, and visits can be arranged directly with the staff at 207-255-3434.

What is the Cost of a Remote Video Visit?
Costs vary and are subject to change, but generally visits range from $5.00 to $15.00 for a 15 to 30 minute online or on-site video visit.

How do you know if your Inmate will be available during the time you schedule?
The Securus system knows the times that Washington County Jail inmates are available for remote video visits.
It will not allow you to schedule a visit with your inmate if they are not available or the video visitation kiosk(s) in the jail are booked already.
