⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessThe Penobscot County Jail is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest jail in the United States. It was built in 1869, over 150 years ago when the previous jail that was built in 1830, was not large enough. Even after a renovation in 1988 that brought the current capacity to 157 inmates, it still retains its beautiful architecture. The jail itself is constructed with granite blacks, while the rest of the building, specifically the part you can see from the street, has a reddish brick facade with stone embellishments.
The Penobscot County Jail is the largest jail in northern Maine, only eclipsed in size in Maine by Portland's Cumberland County Jail. That said, the Penobscott Sheriff is forced to send as many as 80 offenders other jail facilities, and still another 100 that are monitored through pretrial service programming. The jail provides regional booking services for all state, county and municipal law enforcement agencies within the county.
There is constant debate on what to do with the overcrowding. Some want to build a larger jail, for example, renovating the old YMCA building in Bangor, while others want to lock up fewer people. The bottom line is that they need a new, larger jail, but don't have the money to do it. If they do build another jail, this building should be retained as a historical site and tourist attraction, or should be repurposed for something else... but the building should stay.
