Falling under the control of the Lafayette Consolidated Government with state licensing and being part of the juvenile justice system. It provides safe and secure housing for juveniles who are in the custody of the state for having broken a law or being arrested under a warrant. Most who are in the facility are waiting for adjudication through the juvenile court. The top capacity is 56 juveniles, and many of them are first time offenders or minor offenses. Each of the juveniles who are present are under 18 years of age and will be treated for all medical concerns, may receive dental care if needed, and will receive mental health services. Their education continues from their home schools, with teachers attending the facility and maintaining their progress. Staff are onsite around the clock to monitor both the housing units as well as the cameras, and they are able to interact throughout the day with the students. During regular daily interactions each of the youth is encouraged to engage in positive interactions and practice social skills they will use after they leave the facility. Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Lafayette Juvenile Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Lafayette Juvenile Detention Center standards will be disposed of.
