Louisville Metro Youth Detention Center Information

Louisville Metro Youth Detention Center In 2019 the Louisville Metro Youth Detention Center closed due to disrepair and other concerns within the facility, and it was used as a temporary holding location for youth that were waiting for their court date. Only the first floor is currently in use, and it is for short term only, while youth wait for a court date or as they are being transferred from one facility to another. Plans are to renovate the area and return it to its former use throughout 2023 and 2024, with no set date to reopen. The second floor has eight pods that each contain individual cells and a common area with chairs and tables for eating and doing homework, spending recreational time, and making phone calls. As a Youth Transitional Services facility there are no long term programs but there are full services including healthy meals and laundry, clothing and bedding, and the opportunity to continue educational efforts and protect the safety of all students and staff in the building. As the need for youth detention space is growing it will be altered and repaired to fit the needs of the community as a housing location for juveniles who are facing charges, waiting for a court date, being transferred to another facility, or serving a sentence of detention. Mail: 720 W Jefferson St, Louisville, KY 40202 All mail must be through the postal service and contain full addresses for both the receiver and the sender. It can be checked for contraband before it is permitted to be taken to the cells with the juvenile. Phones: Access to phones is provided and youth may call their parents or guardians and are limited to approved contacts only. Visitation: A visitation schedule will be provided to parents and guardians as the facility transitions back, and for those who are currently in residence, that will fit with the routine of the juveniles.
