The Shawnee County Adult Detention Center in Kansas is responsible for housing individuals who have been arrested for violating city, state, and federal laws. The facility has an inmate handbook that outlines the Department's expectations of inmates while they are incarcerated. The facility also provides medical services to inmates. There are separate modules for male and female inmates who are on close observation status and/or suicide watch. The center is a secure facility that houses inmates and is committed to providing the highest level of safety and security for employees, inmates, and the community. The center is equipped with a state-of-the-art locking system and closed-circuit cameras covering every area where inmates are located.
In the summer of 2023 the Shawnee County Commissioners approved requests to begin negotiations and building designs for a new $18 million mental health living unit at the county jail. Since it is estimated that at least half of all Shawnee County inmates at the detention center have serious mental health issues, this has been needed for many years. Jails across the United States are becoming the largest psychiatric centers in their communities.

Video Visitation allows 'approved' friends, family members, attorneys and clergy of an inmate to connect with them using their computer, Securus Video Visitation app, or ‘on-site’ kiosk.

What is the Cost of a Remote Video Visit?
Costs vary and are subject to change, but generally visits range from $5.00 to $15.00 for a 15 to 30 minute online or on-site video visit.
How do you know if your Inmate will be available during the time you schedule?
The Securus system knows the times that Shawnee County Detention Center inmates are available for remote video visits.
