The Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility houses youth who are at least 10 years of age and who are at most 18 years of age. Juveniles who are under 10 years old will be admitted only in specific circumstances and alternatives to detention will be attempt in all cases before they are committed to the facility. Youth who are 18 years old or older will be placed in the adult facility and will be charged in the adult court. Only law enforcement and the juvenile court can admit anyone to the facility, and it serves only Sedgwick County. It has space for up to 108 juveniles in the housing units that include units for the male inmates and units for the female detainees, with them being further separated by age and seriousness of the charges, as well as any prior issues in detention. Upon arrival there is an assessment as part of the intake that will determine which housing unit will be the best fit for the safety of all the residents.
