The St Joseph County Juvenile Detention Center is part of the Thomas N Frederick Juvenile Justice Center that is in South Bend, Indiana. The location houses not only the detention center but also the medical area, the onsite school, juvenile probation, the home monitoring program, and other youth related services. Since opening in 1997, the facility has been operating on an ongoing basis and has not been closed for any reason. There are four hours of school each of the weekdays, providing ongoing education for all students that aligns with the local schools. Constant supervision ensures the safety and security of each of the students, with their rooms being checked every 15 minutes. Each day is structured and encourage routine and discipline, with breakfast beginning at 6am, school at 7:30am, physical education occurring at least one day each week, inspections of the rooms, free time, with lunch around 11am. Schooling proceeds after lunch and is followed by showers and snacks, along with room inspections, and followed by any mental health care, counselling or other programs, with movies for the rewards for good behavior occurring on the weekends, and bedtime ranges from 8pm to 10pm. Nurses check the medical status of the students twice a day and all care is provided. Mail: 1000 S. Outgoing mail is permitted and envelopes are provided each Friday, with mail being collected and sent each day of the week, with postage being paid by the facility. Calls are based upon their level in the behavioral program and are scheduled after 6pm, with Level 2 having calls Sunday and Wednesday, Level 3 on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Level 4 Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Visitation: Visits are with approved visitors only, most often the parent or guardian, and children of the youth may only visit on Monday or Thursday at 10am. Regular visits will occur based upon housing pod and level of behavior, will all visits beginning after 4pm and ending before 8pm.
