Throughout Shelby County all offenders, both misdemeanor and felony, are taken to the 203-bed Shelby County Jail for booking and being held until their trial as well as during a short sentence of under one year. The Shelby County Jail is located in the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center, which also houses the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Shelbyville Police Department in the 80,000 square foot facility. There are 30 corrections officer overseeing the inmates in three 8-hour shifts every day.

Operating under the Sheriff Department, staff ensure that all basic needs are met including meals, laundry, clothi8ng, positive social interactions, a safe and secure environment, learning opportunities, and access to contact with family and friends who are not incarcerated.
