Up to 71 juveniles may be housed at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility once all other options are exhausted. As the only facility of it’s kind in the state it services the entire state and all youth who are determined to require detention or who are committed to the youth justice department will remain at this facility for their entire detention. It offers separate housing facilities for male and female youth, and has a total of 3 housing units. In addition, there is both a school for academic education and a training facility for learning vocational and employable skills. Each student will rotate spending time in each of these buildings and learn throughout their experience. Life skills are a main focus, with all treatments and learning opportunities intended to provide youth with all the capabilities and skills to create a healthy and successful future. Transitional teams will assist those who are being released to prepare for family reunification and reintegration into their communities. Each student will have all their basic needs met as well as these learning opportunities, as well as times and activities to develop social skills and learn to fit in with others throughout their communities.
