With 50 beds for the four counties that access the facility, the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center accepts both male and female juvenile offenders who are determined to require detention. They will remain in the facility until their first court date where it will be determined if they will be further detained until their sentence, or if they will wait for the results at home. Before using the facility, there are other alternatives that are considered including home detention, community service, and other interventions. Once it has been determined that further detention is required, they will remain at this facility or be transferred to a larger one with additional resources. Most youth will remain a resident here for an average of 13 days during which they will receive regular classwork in the onsite classroom from licensed teachers, counselling for any past trauma or mental health concerns, anger management and life skills, and opportunities to engage in healthy social interactions, and any other required services. Youth are provided with supplies for two letters each week, as well as time to both read and write letters, and are permitted to write more letters if the postage is supplied by the family. Phones: Phone calls are provided each week, though the privilege may be removed for rule breaking or other infractions. Parents and guardians are able to accept calls while all other numbers require special approval. Visitation: Visitation is encouraged, and parents, grandparents, and guardians are preapproved for regular visits, with others requiring special approval.
