Putnam County is a member of the regional group that use the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center that is located in Daytona Beach, Florida. It has a total of 50 beds that are used for both male and female juvenile offenders, each in their own housing units. Individuals are provided with their own room or cell, while the facility is created to feel similar to a home or school environment rather than an adult jail. This allows for a more positive and relaxed environment that is better for the mental health and social interactions of the youth who are detained. Each resident has a program that is focused on their personal needs and concerns, including their schoolwork, counseling, skill development, group activities, and individual recreation time. Anger management classes are provided, as well as treatment for any addictions or substance abuse, and trauma recovery and healing for those who benefit from it. Meeting individual needs is the only way to provide a successful outcome for each individual and provide them with the tools they need for success outside of the facility. Youth are able to make one phone call each week but can earn additional phone calls through staying focused and on track with their program, and following the rules that are in place.
