They are held here while they wait for a court date, during a trial, and if they are being sent to a commitment facility or serving a short sentence. The average stay is only a few days, around 12 days. During those 12 days they are responsible for personal hygiene, maintaining a clean space, attending class during each weekday, participating in any counselling that is required, and interacting with others in a positive way. Privileges such as phone calls and extras are removed when behavior is unacceptable or rules are broken, and they may earn additional phone calls and other benefits by making good choices and following the rules. This is all to encourage responsibility and discipline, which is beneficial in each area of life. Recreational time may be used for reading, writing letters, or sharing time with games and other activities in the common area with other students. Substance abuse treatment and other mental health care is focused on to give each youth the best tools for their future. Mail: Letters may be both received and sent through the postal system each day, with no limit on how much they may correspond with others. Phones: Telephones are provided in the common areas of the housing units and parents and guardians are approved contacts for each of the students, who are allowed to call at least once a week and as often as daily. Incoming calls may be accepted during certain evening hours. Visiting: To ensure that families are able to visit there are two visiting days provided, both Sunday 1pm-2pm and Thursday 7pm-8pm.
