Located in Tampa, Florida, the Hillsborough Regional Juvenile Detention Center West serves only the county of Hillsborough at this time. It has a top capacity of 80 juveniles, and most will remain an average of 12 days. They are only held at this location if they are assigned to it by the court, and they will remain until they have been sentenced or placed into a commitment facility. Safety, security, and humane treatment of all students and staff are the first focus of the facility, and each student is treated with respect and care throughout their stay. School classes are held Monday to Friday and will begin after breakfast and continue until after lunch. These classes are provided by the local department of education and follow the guides of the local schools. This allows for an easy transition of their education to the facility and then back to their school. Medical and mental health concerns are addressed, including any substance abuse or use, anger management, learning delays, and other concerns. Physical activity, group activities, and recreational time are all provided to improve health and to support positive social interaction and growth of social skills. Juveniles will learn to be respected and contributing members of their community by become such within the detention center community. Mail: All mail is subject to assessment and any that contains contraband, conversations or planning of illegal activity, or inappropriate content may be censored or refused. Visiting: Visiting hours are in place two days each week to permit all families the opportunity to visit. Upon arrival only parents, legal guardians, and grandparents are approved visitors, however there is a process to add others to the visitation list. Visiting hours occur on Wednesday 7pm-8pm and Saturday 1pm-2pm.
