Gilchrist County Juvenile Detention Information

Gilchrist County is one of the several counties that have joined together in the Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center. By combining their efforts they have access to some of the 45 beds to house juvenile offenders who are determined by the probation department to require detention. A juvenile services office is maintained within Gilchrist County to make decisions on which are to bed released to await trial, when charges will be dropped, and if they require detention until their trial. In the last instance they are transferred to the Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center where they will remain for an average of 11 days. Each day begins with time for personal hygiene and then a strict schedule will be followed. All meals are healthy and provided at set times throughout the day, with school, physical activities, arts, recreation time, and counselling or other treatments as required. The facility is intended to feel more like a school or home than a jail, and this improves the interactions between students and staff as well as between the youth themselves. Through required assessments, any mental health concerns or learning disabilities will receive a plan for treatment and any accommodations needed for school. These will be passed on to the school they attend after their release and to the family to ensure treatment continues beyond their confinement. Mail: Time to read and write letters is provided, along with postage for 2 letters each week, with additional postage being provided by the families. Mail is checked for contraband and may be censored or denied based upon its contents. All mail must be addressed to the detainee at 3440 NE 39th Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32609 Phones: Outgoing phone calls are encouraged during free recreational time, which usually occurs in the evening after school and programming has been completed for the day. Youth are permitted to call adults in their immediate family including parents and legal guardians. Visiting: For visiting purposes, parents, grandparents, and legal guardians are the only approved visitors unless special permission is granted for others. Visiting hours are provided on Thursdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm and again on both Saturday and Sunday 1:30pm to 2:30pm.
