The old Escambia County Jail in Florida had been described as "uninhabitable" by a commissioner due to issues such as leaks, mold, and cell doors that don't work. Inmates have been moved into the new Escambia County Correctional Facility, which also has its own problems such as one of the three elevators not working for weeks, but there are improvements over the former jail for sure.  Escambia County Jail in Florida is unique due to its high incarceration rate, its dedication to public service and the care, custody and control of inmates, and its plans to move inmates to a new facility due to the conditions at the old jail not meeting standards.

In the Escambia County Correctional Facility each housing unit has a day area, recreational yard, triage room and multi-purpose room. The multi-purpose room can be utilized for classes and religious services for the inmates.. Inmates can receive medical treatment at housing units and will not need to get escorted to an infirmary out-patient clinic to receive medical services, saving time, officers needed and jeopardizing the safety of staff and other medical providers. The new facility is designed with separate wings to house and provide services for juveniles, keeping juveniles out of normal sight and sound of adult inmates.

The new facility even has a gym for staff and a courtroom for inmate's initial hearing.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office also works to improve the quality of life and protect the property of all individuals in Escambia County.

During the transition and when there is overcrowding, inmates may be housed in other jails in surrounding counties.
