Both male and female juvenile offenders are housed at this location if they are aged 10 through 17 and have been sentenced to detention or they are waiting for their trial and sentence to be determined or youth who are committed long term from ages 12 to 20. This allows for the facility to accommodate all of the juveniles who need it and to offer rehabilitation services, medical services, therapy and counselling, and mental health services to these youth. While in detention they will receive consistent schooling that is arranged to match what they are learning in the local public schools, life skills and decision making, socail skills and other necessary skills. There is a transition program to assist in their return to their community, recreational time, and physical education. There is no limit to how much mail a student may receive, and if postage is supplied by their family, they may send several letters each week. Mail will be opened and either censored when necessary or returned to the sender if contraband is found. Phones: Each month there will be at least two periods of time where the students will have access to phones in order to call or to receive a call from their immediate family and other approved individuals. The Platte Valley Youth Services Center allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office.
