About the Sacramento County Main Jail

Sacramento County Main Jail in California is a 437,000 square foot building with eight floors. It was built in 1989 and has 2,432 inmate beds. Women inmates are housed on the 7th floor and make up ten percent of the jail population. These women were featured in a Netflix streaming reality program called "Jailbirds". The jail is located at 651 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. The facility can be contacted by phone at 916-874-6752.

This jail has been under consideration for an expanded number of beds for years. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department that overseas the jail has stipulated that they desperately need a new intake and healthcare facility in order to be compliant with legal Disability Rights requirements. They need to add a medical and psychiatric clinic in order to keep from overusing segregation with mentally ill inmates.

Many in the Sacramento community have fought a jail expansion even though the jail is not compliant with current laws and is not adhering to a court approved settlement. It is thought that the money they want to spend could be more effectively used on prevention and social services outside of a jail system.

Currently, and to some degree because of the physical design of the building, inmates are not housed according to risk classifications or mental health considerations, which can be very problematic when there are staff shortages.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's office offers online e-Services for inmate data. A person arrested in Sacramento County will either be brought to Sacramento County Main Jail or to the other County jail, Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center. If you wish to search for an inmate in Sacramento County Main Jail, you need to know the person's legal name, and if you have it, you should include the X-Reference Number that's been assigned to the inmate. You can scroll down for more information about searching for an inmate or select Inmate Search.
