Mariposa County Juvenile Detention Center Information

Within Mariposa County the Juvenile Court handles all juvenile issues up until the youth is 18 years old, however they may extend their jurisdiction until the age off 21, which also allows the Mariposa County Juvenile Detention Center to house youth of that age. Before considering incarceration there are other options available for the court, such as home supervision, informal probation, prevention programs, and each of these is considered before a youth will be assigned to the juvenile hall. This facility is a special purpose facility that allows them to house youth only for up to 96 hours. This is enough time to determine if they are a risk to themselves or others, to have their first court date that will determine if they will be released or if they will be held for their trial, at which point they will either be released or prepared for transport. Those who are required to be held for longer than 96 hours, including those who are sentenced to a set time within the facility, will be transferred to another facility. Mariposa County has entered into contracts with Tuolumne, Madera, and Kern Counties to house their youth who require longer stays. Both the availability of space and the requirements of each individual case will determine which facility they are transferred to. Mail: Youth do not remain in this temporary facility long enough to receive mail. Phones: Youth are permitted to call their parents or guardians after their admittance to the facility, however the temporary nature of the facility limits future calls. Visitation: There are no visitation hours for this facility due to the short amount of time they are held at this location before transfer. Visits will be permitted at their final housing facility.
