It is considered a regional medium security jail that mainly houses pretrial detainees, tose who have been sentenced and are doing their time, and those who are awaiting transport to state prisons or being extradited to other facilities in the state. The five story Humboldt County Correctional Facility was built in 1996, replacing the old jail next door (built in 1946) that now houses the Humboldt County District Attorney's office. The jail, managed and staffed by the county sheriff's office, is known as the ugliest building in town, and rightfully so.
Since 2017 there have been plans to expand the jail, primarily for a Community Re-entry Facility, but politics and government wrangling (and lack of funds) has continuously gotten in the way, but in 2023 it was finally approved. The 28,500 square foot facility will house 44 low-level offenders and 20 additional staff, at an initial cost of $29 million.
The Humboldt County Correctional Facility can be contacted 24 hours a day by calling 707-441-5159. The facility, along with the county courthouse, is located in a one block area bordered by 4th and 5th Streets and I and J Avenues. Inmates at the jail are assessed and classified before they are assigned to a housing unit. Most are housed in dormitories, however the most violent are kept apart and kept in cells. Unfortunately, the jail has no outside recreation area.
You can go online and look up to see in an inmate is in custody on the Humboldt County Daily Jail Reports, or you can search for an inmate on Vinelink Inmate Search. You can also call the jail at 707-441-5159 to get information about an inmate or any of the inmate services that you can't learn about on this page in the sections below. You can also look up whether you or someone else has an Arrest Warrant.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. You can also send them books, magazines and newspapers, but only directly from the publisher.
