Santa Cruz County Juvenile Detention Information

Though this facility has 32 beds, it currently has an operational capacity of only 16, which allows for 16 youth offenders between the ages of 8 and 18 years old to be placed here. They are here as they wait for a trial, during their trial and before they are given a sentence, and as they serve their sentence. While they remain in the facility there are many programs offered and that are expected to be participated in including arts and crafts, exercise, recreation, and educational and school classes that operate during the weekdays. Students are expected to complete all of their work and to maintain or improve their grades before they return to their regular school after their release. A behavior management program is used to encourage positive choices and good behavior from all detainees, and allows for them to earn visits and additional calls with their families, levels of the program are shown through the color of shirt that they wear, and increased privileges are earned as they work to the higher levels by making positive decisions, following all rules, and choosing good behavior. Mail: Postcards are permitted and can be both sent and received during detention, to approved people on their mailing list. Those who are on probation or parole are unable to communicate with detainees. Phones: Juvenile offenders will be permitted to call their parents at least once each week, but with the behavior program they may be permitted up to three calls each week. Incoming calls are not available. Visitation: Visiting hours are provided on Saturday and Sunday, and one visit of 30 minutes is permitted for each youth offender, however they may earn additional time with good behavior. All visits must be scheduled in advance by calling 520-375-8195 and will be between the hours of 1pm and 5pm.
