Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail is one of the most secure and technologically advanced facilities in Arizona, if not the nation. It's size is 577,883 square feet, and it has 1,152 cells and 2,064 beds, with 288 cells designated specifically for high-security inmates.

This jail has a central intake section on the first floor with initial appearance courts, a visitation area, a classification section, pretrial services and separate housing for veterans. It also has an integrated high security system, security electronics, low voltage equipment and pneumatic locking systems.

Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail is responsible for the care and custody of thousands of inmates and is located at 201 S. 4th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85003. The contact number for the jail is (602) 876-0322, which can be used to get in touch with the jail or ask general questions such as bond amount, charges, visitation, inmate book accounts and phone services.

Visitation hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM and visitors must have a GTL account and fill out a white form with the inmate's full name, date of birth and booking number. Visitors must not have been convicted of any felonies or spent time at a Maricopa County jail within the last 12 months.

Remote video visits can be conducted over the internet through the use of a visitor’s home computer and a video kiosk located in the inmate housing units. On-site visits are done through the use of a visitor video kiosk located at either the Lower Buckeye Jail or 4th Avenue Jail.

Money may be placed on an inmate’s “money account” by mailing a Cashiers Check (official check), U.S. Postal or Western Union money order with the inmate's name and booking number to the jail. After visitation hours, money may be deposited at the Bonds and Fines public window located at the 4th Avenue Jail.

For immediate help buying a bond with a credit card, bank deposit, wired funds or using collateral call (602) 258-4488. If you have any questions or need proper legal representation for an inmate call (602) 307-0808.
Inmates must release all booked-in personal property, except for their clothing, when requesting a property release, and the Sheriff's Office does not accept any U.S. currency or checks.

Conditions in the jail are tough both mentally and physically, with inmates left alone in SMU (Segregated Management Unit) cells, which were designed to remove them from human contact. Inadequate medical care and mental health services have been reported for years, with a federal judge holding that the defendants failed to comply with a former judgment or the constitution in providing adequate mental help and medical provision. Therefore, Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail allows checks by the local news stations by letting them to tour the medical area, booking area and ICE station. Bond payments and fines are processed at the jail.
