About the Palmer Correctional Center
Palmer Correctional Center in Alaska is a medium security facility located at Glen Hwy - Mile 58 PO Box 919, Palmer, AK, 99645 with a capacity of 514 minimum and medium security inmates. It recently reopened in January 2023 after a nearly $17 million renovation project and houses inmates serving sentences and those awaiting sentencing. It offers programming for substance abuse, sex offender treatment, mental health services, education, and other services. It is divided into medium- and minimum-security wings with dormitory-style housing, large outdoor recreation areas on the minimum-security side and a gym on the other side. It is a hybrid facility, meaning that inmates of different security levels are all housed under one roof and inmates can access GED programs, mental health and substance abuse treatments. The contact number for the facility is 907-745-5054, and the fax number is also 907-745-5054. Inmates can receive money via visiting, United States Postal Money Order or prepaid account and must use Securus Tech to make phone calls from the facility. When sending mail to an inmate, include their full name and ID number and visiting hours depend on the inmate's group number and must be verified with the inmate. Visiting hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday evenings from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM (adult visitors only), Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM (adult visitors only), and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM (minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian). Inmates are allowed one to two visits of 30 minutes each at the facility, and potentially no limit on the number of visits when using the home based video visitation. Visitors must adhere to the dress code and other rules, guidelines and schedules listed on the Palmer Correctional Center page. The reopening of the prison has sparked concern among criminal justice reform advocates about the timing of the reopening and what it says about the overall direction of Alaska’s justice system, with prison populations continuing to increase. Records obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska show that several DOC facilities have been exceeding emergency capacity standards, compromising safety, sanitation, and care for vulnerable populations such as youth.
