About the Oldham County Jail & Sheriff

Work Assignments: Only inmates classified as minimum custody should be assigned to work outside the security perimeter. Their work should be supervised by jailers or individuals designated by the sheriff.

Pretrial detainees and inmates awaiting transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, following conviction or probation/parole/mandatory supervision revocation, have the option to volunteer for participation in any work program operated by the sheriff. These programs utilize the labor of convicted misdemeanants. Inmates who have not been convicted are not obligated to participate in work programs. However, all inmates may be required to maintain cleanliness in their immediate living areas.

The assignment of inmate work should consider the condition of each individual, including any known pregnancies. Inmate activities must not be supervised by other inmates. Additionally, inmates should not have access to inmate records, handle inmate funds, or manage commissary accounts. Inmates are not permitted to perform maintenance on locking systems or other security detention devices. In regular circumstances, inmates should not be made to work more than 48 hours per week, except in emergency situations.

Rehabilitation and Education: The facility has developed a written plan, approved by the Commission, for inmate rehabilitation and education. This plan aims to make the best use of available resources within the community where the facility is located. It includes programs that inmates can voluntarily participate in, such as:

  1. Testing and counseling related to: (A) Alcohol or drug abuse issues (B) Vocational rehabilitation (C) Academic and vocational aptitudes and goals (D) Job placement (E) Family problems (F) Personal psychological or psychiatric problems

  2. Participating in academic, reading, and/or training programs, where feasible and with the assistance of community resources.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens after booking?

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Oldham County Jail & Sheriff will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.
