As a full service holding facility it not only holds those who are awaiting their trial but also those who have completed their trial and are serving their sentence. Both short and long term sentences are served at this location, as smaller local jails will send those who are facing long sentences to this facility to complete their sentences.
The building was completed in 1964, and maintains an active working program encouraging inmates who qualify to perform work duties during their incarceration. To determine if someone you know is incarcerated within the prison, the inmate roster is linked directly above this section for the prison and is updated regularly. If you find that someone you care about has been arrested and taken to this facility, you can receive phone calls from them, send and receive mail, and schedule a visit. Visitors must be on the approved visitor list, and an inmate may refuse a visit from anyone at any time.
The Dauphin County Prison operates much as a small community that is almost self sufficient. It includes laundry facilities where inmates may work doing the laundry for the entire prison, a kitchen that is responsible for all meals and offers approved inmates an opportunity to improve their skills while being supervised by a chef and officers, and medical and dental care is provided as needed. To prevent added transportation risks, the building has a video system that allows inmates to attend their arraignment and other court dates via video, without leaving the property.
Having inmates work in supporting the functions of the facility both helps them to gain new skills, work on existing skills, and contribute to the community in which they live.
