About the Harney County Corrections
Operated by the Harney County Sheriff’s Office, the Harny County Jail is located in Burns, Oregon. Each day the jail roster is updated with those who are currently in custody, including those who were booked in overnight. As this is only completed once per day and may not include those who arrived during the day. With a capacity of only 20 this small holding jail was completed in 1998 to meet the immediate needs of the arresting officers in the county. It was built to house only male inmates who are adults and does not admit juveniles. Due to the temporary nature of this housing unit, there are not as many programs and services as the larger jails who accommodate long sentences. Visitors are permitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am until 11 am, and on Saturday and Sunday from 2 pm until 5 pm. A visitor application must be filled out and submitted for approval before a visit can be scheduled, and minors may only visit if they are a child of the detainee or over 17 and the spouse of the detainee. Outgoing phone calls can be made through the CIDNET system. Money may be added to this account online and allows inmates to make phone calls to approved numbers. Fees are based upon purchasing data, which is used once both parties are on the phone, and calls are charged via prepaid data purchases. Bail can be paid online or in person. It is necessary to know the name of the inmate, where they are being held, and the amount of bail that is needed. Once the page is reached the debit or credit card info is entered the payment is processed and the release process can begin.

Harney County Corrections Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Harney County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Harney County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Harney County Corrections?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Harney County and other Oregon and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Harney County Corrections will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Harney County Corrections Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Harney County Corrections?

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
Call Harney County Corrections at 541-573-6256 to confirm the address to send the money order to and how they want it made out.
Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.
Call 541-573-6256 to ask facility personnel who to make the money order out to, and where to send it.
