Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center Information

The Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center was previously known as the Columbus RYDC and serves several counties within that area. It has space for both male and female detainees, and due to the time that it takes for court cases and sentencing and transfers, some may remain in the facility while they are young adults. To ensure that none of the students fall behind there are classes each day that correspond with the local curriculum, as well as GED classes and tests, and college courses for those who have finished high school. Counseling is often provided as part of the court order or sentence but is also encouraged before the trial to help students with any mental health or behavioral concerns, and treatment is provided for substance abuse or medical requirements. Dental care is also provided, as well as physical education, social skills, and life skills. With a strict schedule in place and safety precautions at every moment, the facility maintains a focus on keeping all residents, staff, and visitors safe. Mail: No mail or items may be dropped off at the facility, but mail can be sent through the postal system. Residents may receive an unlimited number of letters or postcards but will only be provided with enough for 2 to be sent out each week, requiring additional supplies from their family or friends. 7700 Chattworth Road, Midland, GA 31820 Phones: Phones are provided to each of the residents so they may maintain contact with their support system outside of the facility, but each contact must be approved by the court or probation officer. What happens during booking in Troup County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Troup County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.
