Originally opening in 1992 it had pod housing units that were double-tiered and in 2003 there were two more housing units built that added an additional 66 beds each.
San Joaquin County South Jail, also called the Main or Core Jail, has a full capacity of 840 inmates and each of the core 6 units are linked by one corridor, that remains secured around the clock. Within this set of units, 2 of them were designed and are used for supporting medical or sheltered housing functions, providing increased care and services for them.
Four intake units allow there to be inmates housed there for up to 72 hours only, during which time they are intended to be transferred to another housing location however they are sometimes in these units for 15 days, and some are used for housing female inmates for their entire time of incarceration. They may also be used for medical housing when required, as it allows inmates to be separated from the general population.
Within the area of the jail that is known as the Main Jail or South Jail there are 6 housing units, and these are where general population is located, with one for female housing, one for special needs or protective custody, and the remainder of the units for housing male inmates.

Programs are operating that provide ongoing educational opportunities and allow for inmates to undergo personal growth, learn new life skills, practice social skills, learn employable skills and procedures, and to attend support groups.
Medical care is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and mental health professionals provide emergency care as well as ongoing individual and group counseling. Substance abuse treatment and others are provided for those who will benefit from it, and substance use education is a key part of the ongoing education provided.
