The administration building remains separate from the jail itself, and it boosts 284 beds, which it occasionally exceeds. Women make up approximately 20% of the inmate total, higher than most jails.
On average there are just over 2200 bookings each year, making it a busy prison that sees many inmates each year. Inmates are housed there both before their trial and after, when they are completing their sentences. It offers a full range of services including meals, clothing, laundry, phones, visitation, medical care and mental health support, and dental care. The health of the inmate is addressed as a whole, with improvements to all areas to help improve their success after release.
The jail houses 'spillover' inmates from Schuylkill County, Union County, Snyder County, and Montour County.There are over 75 people working there.
Mail can be both sent and received by anyone incarcerated, and will be passed to them shortly after it has been inspected for contraband. This includes not only stickers, cards, lipstick and other make ups, polaroids, or conversation that includes illegal topics or discussions of illegally leaving the prison. A commissary is available to purchase by inmates if there is money in their account, or friends and family may order care packages through pacountypackages.com.

Visits are permitted and are 25 minutes long. These may be either onsite visits that occur at the jail or offsite visits that are completed online. For an offsite visit access is through the ICS Mobile app, and registration for both is done online through icsolutions.com. Set hours for visits vary by location, with the lobby kiosk being available 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday, onsite 8:30am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday, and offsite visits being available from 7:30am to 8:25pm every day.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. • Any inmate or visitor whose behavior is disruptive during a visit may have his/her visiting privileges suspended/terminated.
• All visits are subject to monitoring and recording.
• All visits must be scheduled 6 hours prior to the appointment or up to 13 days in advance.
• You must check-in 15 minutes prior to the scheduled visit.
• Valid picture identification (e.g., driver's license, State I.D., or Military I.D. with picture) is required of all visitors, with the exception of children under the age of 17.
• Visitors under the age of 17 must be accompanied and supervised by an authorized adult visitor.
• Visitors who 'arrive' after the scheduled start time may not be allowed to visit.
• Clothing must cover all private/sensitive body areas.
• The visitation schedule may be canceled or altered on holidays or for safety/security reasons.
• Northumberland County Prison can disconnect, deny, change, or cancel a visit at any time.
• Internet connectivity issues during offsite visits will NOT be refunded.
• Each visitation session will show a timer to display elapsed time.

Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

The Northumberland County Prison allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
