About the Fairfield County Jail

Lancaster, Ohio is the home of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, and is the office responsible for the Fairfield County Jail and the care of its 384 inmates.

The Fairfield County Jail, located in the heart of downtown Lancaster, Ohio, was built and occupied in August of 2018 and has 110,800 square feet of building space under the roof. This includes both the Sheriff's operations and the jail. The total cost to build it was $34.7 million. The facility consists of 384 beds on two levels, administrative offices for the sheriff’s department, a 911 dispatch center and training areas. In addition, the jail includes intake, booking and visitation areas. It also has four classrooms and outdoor recreation areas, in addition to a full-service kitchen.

The address is 345 Lincoln Avenue. in Lancaster, OH 43130. The jail can be reached 24 hours a day by calling 740-652-7301. While it does not have an official inmate search, you can call the jail to get information about an inmate, as well as getting their ID number which you will need to mail them letters anyhow.

There are two ways to see if an inmate is in the Fairfield County Jail without calling the jail at 740-652-7301.

They are:

  1. You can look them up on Vinelink, a nationwide resource to follow an inmate you are concerned with or care about their whereabouts. Vine was originally started to help victims of crimes.
  2. You can register with any of the inmate services below. After registering, you choose Fairfield County Jail, then type in the inmates name. If they are in this jail, their name will come up.

Several opportunities and programs are offered for inmates at this jail to help all inmates maintain their health and safety, as well as to gain skills that will help in all areas of life. Drug and alcohol programs are present to help overcome addictions as needed, as well as a chaplain for those who are religious.

A re-entry coalition was created in 2010 to help inmates and offenders when they are released. It assists in ensuring they have skills and can locate a job, helps to provide faith services that can extend beyond the sentence, and support the prisoners at work program. Prisoners at work allow some inmates who meet the set criteria to have jobs while they are incarcerated which can improve employment possibilities upon their release.

Some basic statistics about the Fairfield County Jail are as follows:

  • The average stay for an inmate is 30 days.
  • The average daily population is about 280 inmates.
  • The majority of criminal charges for inmates are misdemeanors, about 65% of the total.

The mission of this jail is to build a safe community and to reduce the chances of offenders returning after they have been released. Rather than focus on punishments they are focused on rehabilitation measures and helping each to have a successful re-entry to their community when they have completed their sentence. To meet these goals visits, phone calls and letter writing is permitted to help them stay in touch with loved ones.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. Friends and family of inmates in the Fairfield County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

Unlimited inmate reply letters are processed for electronic delivery to your smartphone and email at no extra charge.
The cost to send an electronic letter is approximately $1.00.

Here’s how it works for Fairfield County Jail:
1.    All offender mail (paper and electronic) is addressed and delivered to TextBehind. Electronic mail is sent through the apps (iphone, Google Play). Paper mail is sent to the address below:

2.    If it was sent via TextBehind's app (iphone, Google Play), TextBehind can process it within one business day.
3.    An additional step is involved in processing mail that is sent using the U.S. Postal Service. TextBehind will  use a scanner to make digital files of the contents of the mailing—including cards, photos or artwork.
4.    All digital files are then forwarded to the offender’s assigned prison.
5.    Fairfield County Jail mailroom prints approved pages and delivers them to the inmate.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • TextBehind does not deliver any mail to the inmate directly, nor do they guarantee delivery of your letters to the inmates by the courier, jail or prison staff. Once they process your mail and ship them out on your behalf, they are out of the loop entirely. However, at times they may offer to resend your letters under certain strict conditions as a courtesy.
  • Inmates do not receive any invites when you add them, and neither do they need to accept the use of TextBehind service. Once you add the inmate, you can create letters for them.

Here’s what happens when TextBehind receives a letter from an inmate:

  • Upon receiving, TextBehind staff open their letters, scan, and upload high-quality images to your TextBehind account as a complimentary service. You are not required to have any money or credits balance in your TextBehind account to receive inmate letters.
  • Next, you will receive a text and email alert to notify you of any new incoming reply letters. At that time, you can log into the TextBehind website or mobile app and view letters in your CONTACTS >> Click on Conversation Icon.

YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS...

  • Inmates do require a stamp to send out their letters to TextBehind using Postal Service.
  • The cash or credit balance from your TextBehind account will not be shared with inmates as a substitute for the stamps.
  • All letters printed and shipped by TextBehind nationwide to virtually any jail or prison facility are delivered to the jails/prisons by couriers such as the USPS or FedEx as their standard process.
  • After the shipments, TextBehind has no control over the process.
  • The delivery of your letters depends on couriers and prison staff taking necessary action on time.
