About the Dona Ana County Detention Center
Separated into two distinct yet connected facilities, the adult and the juvenile, the Dona Ana County Detention Center is supported both by paid staff as well as volunteers. There is a capacity of 846 detainees and another 50 at the juvenile facility. The housing units were originally designed for 562 beds during the original build in 1995, and it has been expanded and renovated to create a total space of 846, with seven housing units. Most cells are double occupancy, and the majority of detainees were waiting for their trial. In the upgrades the partitions between the inmates and the guards was altered from bars to clear glass, so that there is constant view to the cells and monitoring of the actions and behaviors of inmates. As part of the rehabilitation efforts there are many programs that are operational within the facility from religious services to inmate workers and work release, educational classes, and drug and alcohol addiction treatments. It is the goal of the facility that each inmate leave with more skills and education than they arrive with, and that they gain skills that will help after their sentence has finished. Work programs allow inmates to spend less time within the facility and to earn money to support their families and themselves while they remain incarcerated. Along with these programs, visitation is encouraged and has been shown to improve the results of the efforts at rehabilitation and through gettingout.com video visitations are available each day from 8am until 9:30pm. In person visits are available each day, and begin at 8am and end by 10pm with breaks for meals and head counts. Phone calls are also regularly available and can be funded through conenctnetwork.com, with text messaging and other services through gettingout.com.
