About the Sumter County Detention Center

The Sumter County Detention Center, first built at its existing location in 1965, is currently rated for 527 inmates. Over the years it has undergone many expansions, tear downs and renovations. As it stands today, it is an architectual marvel (from a jail point of view) and a model of inmate logistics and efficiency.

In the early 2000s the Sumter County Detention Center was a mess. With only 178 beds, there were days in which they had twice that number of inmates, with men sleeping on the floor and the place reeking of sweat, urine and cleaning fluids. The Sheriff's Department was spending lots of taxpayer money moving inmates back and forth from neighboring county jails to court every day. It was at that time they decided to either turn the operation over to a private prison management company or build a new facility. They chose the latter.

The first expansion came in 2010. They added 138,200 square feet of space at a total cost of $40 million. The expansion added a total of 192 beds, a laundry, visitation center, commissary, booking and release center, a 40-bed classification area, a 64 bed mental health area, a 24 bed special housing area, and a new medical clinic.

The second expansion was completed in 2021. It added 38,662 square feet with 256 beds. For $19 million, the county received a two level building of modular cells in multiple pods, with an enclosed fence walkway leading the adjoining buildings.

The Sumter County Detention Center, in a county well known for being home to the famous Villages Retirement Community for active adults, is located at 219 E Anderson Avenue in Bushnell, Florida. You can reach the jail 24 hours a day by calling 352-569-1700.

You can look up inmates online using the Sumter County Inmate Jail Roster. It provides mugshots, criminal charges, bond amounts and personal information such as dates of birth on the newly arrested, current inmates and those who have been released. You can choose a date range.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail only allows you to send personal mail on a postcard. Friends and family of inmates in the Sumter County Detention Center can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 352-569-1700.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Sumter County Detention Center?

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Choice 1 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

Sumter County Detention Center uses CommissaryDeposit.com to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Choice 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.

**Call 352-569-1700 first to ask Sumter County Detention Center if this option is still available.
