About the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail

The construction of the Jefferson Davis Parish Consolidated Jail was completed in 2019 at 1704 Hwy. 90 West (Shankland Ave.) in Jennings. The new facility can accommodate 200 inmates, replacing the previous jail built in 1964 that held 62 inmates.

The new facility features holding and isolation cells, a booking area, medical office with an exam room, a central command center, a kitchen, and separate recreation yards for male and female inmates. The decision to construct the new facility was based on a 2012 feasibility study, which determined that the existing jail was undersized, outdated, consistently overcrowded, and in need of expensive repairs and security upgrades. The facility is owned by the Police Jury, with operations overseen by the sheriff's office.

For inmate commissary, orders can be placed every Wednesday before noon, and items will be received the following business day. To add money to an inmate's books, you can visit the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office Dispatch Lobby and use the Commissary Kiosk, or use the online service at https://www.citytelecoin.com/. Additional fees may apply. Alternatively, you can order commissary items online and have them directly shipped to the inmate through https://orders.tigercommissary.com/.

Inmates are allowed to receive mail, which is screened before distribution on weekdays. Please address the envelope with the inmate's name and send mail to P.O. Box 863, Jennings, LA 70546. Certain rules apply to mail, such as using standard envelopes, no package acceptance, and limitations on the number and content of pictures.

Inmates have phones in their cells for making calls between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. They can purchase phone cards through commissary or set up an account for the person they are calling to charge the calls. To set up an account, you can call 1-800-682-0707 or visit the website provided.

AdvanceConnect™ is a prepaid calling account that allows you to manage your spending on contact calling. Visit https://securustech.online/#/facilities-we-serve for more information. Jefferson Davis Parish Jail Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Jefferson Davis Parish?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Jefferson Davis Parish for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Jefferson Davis Parish and other Louisiana and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

INMATE BONDS

There are three ways to post a Bond for someone in jail.

Property Bond - When posting a property bond you must go to the Tax Assessor's Office and get a description of the property you would like to use to post the bond.

The assessed value of the property must be equal or more than the bond amount.

Once you receive the proper paperwork from the Tax Assessor's Office, you then bring it to the Clerk of Court's Office to run a title search in order to verify there are no judgments, liens, or mortgages on the property.

A mobile home cannot be used for a property bond and the property must be in Jefferson Davis Parish.

Once you have completed these steps you must then bring the paperwork to the Sheriff's Office.

All property bonds are subject to the Sheriff's approval.

Cash Bond - When you wish to post a Cash Bond you must put up the entire bond amount in cash.

Surety Bond - A bondsman posts the bond to get the inmate released from jail. You will have to pay the bondsman 12% of the total bond plus any additional fees the bondsman charges.

*Bonds are only accepted Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
*Property Bonds may require additional fees that are not listed here.
*All bonds have a $30.00 fee for the paperwork.
*All bonds are held until the case has been closed.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail?

There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:

Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail

Bring money to the jail in person.

Jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment.

Jefferson Davis Parish Jail has a Tiger Kiosk in the Lobby that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

If you can't get your questions answered online call the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail at 337-824-3850.

Choice 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

Jefferson Davis Parish Jail and others often use a private company to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Go to the online site for depositing funds. You will need to register an account, which is free to do and use a debit/credit card for the deposits.

Choice 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.

Call Jefferson Davis Parish Jail at 337-824-3850 to confirm the address to send the money order to and how they want it made out.

Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.

Call 337-824-3850 to ask facility personnel who to make the money order out to, and where to send it.
